Yoga and Arthritis - Can it Help You?

Yoga and arthritis is a hot topic these days. Many people have heard that yoga may help with the debilitating effects of yoga, and yes it is true; it can! The yoga that we are interested in to help with arthritis is called Hatha Yoga. The practice of Hatha Yoga focuses on increasing flexibility, postural alignment, strength, endurance, and balance. All of these are very helpful to those suffering from arthritis.Beginning yoga poses are generally easy poses and gentle movements that most people can do. These exercises are safe for people with arthritis and when done properly don't make pain or disease worse, but instead can help relieve pain and stiffness.

In fact, early scientific studies are showing promising results for yoga and arthritis, with improvement in joint health, physical functioning, and improved mental/emotional well-being. If you are an arthritis sufferer, this is good news indeed!

If you think your body is too inflexible to do yoga, or if you haven't exercised in years (or ever!) don't worry. There is a yoga for you. You may end up being the person who will see the most amazing results, as you see your body increase in flexibility, strength, and balance. The beauty of yoga is that it can always be modified for the individual. There are some classes that are done only sitting in a chair. It is important not to judge where you are in terms of ability but to focus on simply doing the movement or pose to the best of your ability. You will be amazed at the improvements you make.

The best way to begin doing yoga is generally by taking a beginner class, led by a qualified teacher who can guide you in the safe and healthy execution of modified poses. Let the instructor know your limitations and don't push past your comfort level. Just remember, the general rule for arthritis patients (and people in general) is that if it hurts, stop.

Books and videos specifically for yoga and arthritis are also available. These may also benefit you, but it is important to do the exercises correctly in order to maximize the benefits and avoid injury.

Always check first with your healthcare professional to see if exercise is suitable for you.

What to Expect With a Beginner Yoga Class

Yoga classes usually contain poses (asanas), breathing techniques (pranyama), and relaxation. Some classes may include meditation or chanting.Beginning classes don't include advanced poses such as standing on your head or other difficult pretzel-like poses. So no need to worry. Beginning yoga classes are simple standing and seated poses that help you develop an awareness of your body in a gradual way. All yoga poses can be modified for your safety and comfort, to accommodate any special needs you may have.

You may want to observe a class prior to taking it to see if you like the instructor or talk to the teacher ahead of time to see if the class is right for you. And just remember to be gentle with your yoga practice, and yourself especially in the beginning.
